ABOUT ME

Mathematics, computer science, and medicine — these became the three great pillars of my scientific life. At first there was only mathematics. Then computer graphics entered the scene, opening an entirely new visual world. In the last twenty years of my career, medicine emerged as a third pillar, transforming equations and algorithms into tools that could help patients. I never abandoned one field for another; instead, each new domain was added to the others and gradually woven into a single fabric.

To live the kind of scientific life that unfolded for me, a very special place was required. I found it at the University of Bremen, with its unique entrepreneurial spirit and openness to experiment. Here I always had the intellectual freedom and breathing space I needed for my scientific adventures.

Today, I am deeply grateful that I can give something back to this extraordinary university: Karin and Heinz-Otto Peitgen Stiftung.

The theme of this photo by Gayla Chandler visualizes some of my interests during the

period 1985-2015: fractals in mathematics and in nature.
